Breaking Stereotypes and Empowering Girls – Emagination Eletter Archive V15-I5
Female Interest in STEM Rises to All-Time High
According to a national Girl Scouts study, 74% of teen girls are interested in STEM but only 43% are considering a STEM-related career. Emagination is working to empower girls and break the stereotypes that lead to underrepresentation in STEM-related fields.
Women in technology are doing amazing things and changing the world for the better. At Emagination, we are playing a part by preparing girls with technology education plus a summer camp experience that is designed to further social development and self-confidence.
Providing Powerful Role Models
We’re proud that about half of Emagination counselors are young adult women pursuing STEM-related careers. In addition, female Camp Directors will lead four of five camp locations this summer. Females serve as positive role models to all campers — especially girls. We believe that female counselors will inspire girls to follow their lead.
Girls Succeed at Emagination
On average, 20% of our campers are female and girls return to Emagination for multiple summers at the same rate as boys! Girls come back to camp because it’s a place where they feel at home, where they make friends, and where they develop both technology skills and life skills. Our goal is to radically increase the number of girls at camp.
We Believe in Co-Ed Learning
Emagination’s approach is to run a fully co-ed program in an environment that promotes inclusion, mutual respect, cooperation and creativity. Boys and girls who learn together are better prepared to work together.
Girls Night at Camp
While we support boys and girls learning together, we also think it’s important for girls to feel comfortable exploring issues that are unique to them. That’s why our program includes Girls Night (day campers invited!). Female staff and campers get together for a night of fun and fellowship in a relaxed environment that encourages open and free expression.
Girls Wing in the Residence Hall
Female overnight campers and staff are housed together in a dedicated wing of a residence hall. The female wing becomes a supportive community for girls that fosters relationships and peer empowerment.
